The photo on the left shows a shovel building an active carbon absorption dam on the Mangniu River in Jilin City, northeast China's Jilin Province, Aug. 22, 2006. The photo on the right shows a reporter shooting the Mangniu River on Aug. 24. A chemical pollution occurring on Aug. 21 in the river, a Songhua River tributary, was brought under control on Aug. 23. The water quality of the Mangniu River and that of its joint section with the Songhua River have both met the standard of the local environmental protection bureau. The pollution was caused by illegal discharge of chemical waste water by a local chemical factory. [Xinhua Photo]
