Vice premier stresses sci-tech in marine development

Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan has urged oceanographers to redouble their efforts to advance marine science and technology by being more innovative and acting after the scientific concept of development.

Zeng made the remarks at a national conference on the marine sci-tech on Monday.

Zeng said frontier technology in key areas had to be mastered and breakthroughs must be made in the exploration of marine resources, environmental protection, engineering equipment, and fundamental science concerning the ocean.

Jointly held by the State Oceanic Administration, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense, the conference aims to work out a five-year plan for the country's marine sci-tech development and hold discussion on future innovation.
